Hello!
I’m The Alternate, nice to meet you!
I’m a self taught, primarily 2D artist with emphasis in chalk pastel, ink and watercolor, and metal. I’m in pursuit of my Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Wisconsin-Madison; and have been a PEOPLE scholar for over a decade.
My pastel work explores themes of interpersonal, spiritual security though animated plant life. These pieces are meant to be meditations on my everyday struggles of mental health and belonging. My flowers, as you will come to understand, are a collective entity that can be individualized into more focused personalities. Combine this with my favorite colors, and my pastel pieces are like a reflection of my subconscious.
My comics on the other hand, come from my love of storytelling. I grew up with cartoon characters as friends, and their worlds as my entertainment. I created my first original character (Anita) before I was even a teenager; having been inspired by other creators like Alex Hirsch and Daron Nefcy. Though the Entelement universe has existed in my head since I was 11, I didn’t learn how to put it to paper until college.
During my time at UW Madison, I’ve been very fortunate to have taken the Making Comics classes multiple times under Jeff Butler (shout out Capt. Action!) and Lynda Barry (shout out Prof. Peanut!). The comics experience has changed my life for the better, and I’m so excited to continue this lifelong endeavor of telling this story.
